Bringing Legends to Life

Nyansa Classical Community is an organization committed to providing families of all backgrounds with a classical, Christian education.

Anyone who knows me knows I am a huge Greek mythology lover and an avid proponent of student experience and education. It was a real treat to get to illustrate new children's curricula for Nyansa based on stories from Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey, and reimagine these iconic characters in diverse ways that celebrate representation and break the Eurocentric mold we often see these characters painted in.

Students of every race and ethnicity deserve to see themselves depicted as heroes.

The Iliad is an ancient Greek epic that tells the story of the Trojan War, focusing on the wrath of the warrior Achilles.

Set during the final weeks of the war, it explores themes of honor, fate, and the cost of glory through the clash between the Greeks and Trojans. Central to the tale is Achilles’ inner conflict and eventual return to battle after the death of his dear friend Patroclus.

The Odyssey follows the Greek hero Odysseus as he journeys home after the Trojan War, facing mythical creatures, divine obstacles, and temptations.

His long voyage tests his cunning, endurance, and loyalty. Meanwhile, his wife Penelope and son Telemachus struggle to fend off suitors and keep hope alive for his return.
