Sketching allows for expereimenting with many aspects of a piece: brainstorming, composition, refinement, etc. They can be done with line, values, or color. No matter how they look, the purpose of sketches is to get all the ideas out of your head and onto the paper - the good, bad, and ugly! Leave no stone unturned in the brainstorming stage.
